
The Autobiography of William Simpson RI
William Simpson was known as Crimean Simpson, a war artist whose fame was assured by his work on the front in the Crimean war. He worked mainly in watercolour but lithographic reproductions were bound and commanded much praise in Victorian London. He has been lauded as an early war correspondent. Much of his work was printed in the Illustrated London News, but originals found their way into many private hands including such elevated patrons as the monarch, and several museums. Fisher Unwin hardback with no DJ. Light brown cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to front and spine. Also a small decoration of an elephant and howdah. Owner’s name on ffep with date 1903. Frontispiece a portrait of the artist protected by a tissue, Upper margin of text block in gilt; other edges rough trimmed. Some foxing throughout and front cover has some staining. Good binding and no additional marks.
