This charming little book, designed to appeal to children, was written by one of the early 20th century experts in early Chinese ceramics, who not only published authoritative and important texts on that subject, but also translated Chinese and Japanese verse legends in order to amuse younger readers - including his own grandchildren, to one of whom this book belonged. Horace Knowles\' illustrations enhance the text delightfully. Arthur Lonsdale Hetherington, CBE (1881-1960) was a civil servant, and an authority on Chinese Ceramics, who published a number of books on the subject, as well as founding the Oriental Ceramic Society (1921) and acting as its secretary. His particular interest was in glazes, and he published \'Chinese Ceramic Glazes\' in 1937. His own collection of ceramics was sold by Bluett\'s in 1953. Horace J Knowles (1884-1954 ) was an author and illustrator, known mostly for his biblical illustrations (New English Bible), but also the author and illustrator of \"Peeps into Fairyland\" (1924). He worked with his brother Reginald L Knowles, on many books, and his style, similar to his brother\'s, has often been described as Art Nouveau. Our book is in excellent condition for its age, and retains its unclipped dust jacket, in good condition apart from a few brownish spots on the back. The book itself is bound in buttercup yellow cloth, with black title lettering on the front and spine. No external signs of wear. Inside, the binding is firm with no loose pages; all pages clean and bright. A few spots of foxing on leading edge, with minimal migration to pages.
