The Charwoman\'s Shadow
A fantasy novel from before the genre really existed, written by Lord Dunsany, otherwise known as Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett. In Spain, during its Golden Age, a lord wishes to marry his daughter to a neighbour, but has no money for her dowry. He sends his son Ramon to a nearby magician who had befriended his father, in hopes that the son would learn to turn lead to gold; the Magician removes the young man\'s shadow in payment, as he has already done to his charwoman. Adventures and romance ensue. First UK 1926 edition with author\'s signature to FEP. Condition: SIGNED BY AUTHOR on FEP. Boards very shelfworn, corner bumped, apparently bleached in spots down the spine, otherwise rubbed and marked; old price and bookseller sticker to front pastedown. Hinges splitting at front, minor to moderate foxing and marks throughout but all pages readable and binding intact.
