Heavy blue cloth covered book with a vellum covered spine. There are gilt titles on the spine and a gilt crest on the front cover.The top edges of the book are also gilt but all the other edges are hand cut. Internally the book is clean, bright and tightly bound. Inside the front cover there are various names. There is a tissue protected frontispiece portrait of the author who was City Librarian of Bristol. This is one of a limited edition of 180, number 145 which was published and printed for the subscribers only. Following the title page there is a dedication which reads: \"To the Chairman and Committee of the Bristol Free Libraries 1883-1893 whose consideration for and confidence in a worthy librarian brightened the closing years of a laborious life this volume is respectfully dedicated.\"
