The years which followed 1066 raised Lakeland to a position of great importance. It became the haven of miserable refugees who fled in hundreds of thousands from the savage Norman devastation of Yorkshire and Lancashire, and , for almost a century maintained a guerrilla warfare which cost the Normans one army after another, until the dread and mysterious mountains of Cumberland came to be regarded with horror by the invaders  It has no dust jacket and slight discolouration on the edges but overall in a very good condition
