Letters of John Holles - 3 volumes
This is the collection, in three volumes, of the letters of John Holles, the first Earl of Clare (1565-1637). Through his marriage to Anne Stanhope, he inherited Thurland Hall in Nottingham which was later known as Clare Place. The family seat was at Haughton Hall in the parish of Bothamsall, which was demolished in the late eighteenth century. He served as High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 1591-92. He was comptroller of the household of Prince Henry until the prince\'s death on 6 November 1612. He was Member of Parliament for Nottingamshire from 1604-1611 and from 1614-1616. He was created 1st Baron Haughton on 9th July 1616 and 1st Earl of Clare on 2nd November 1624. This set of volumes have been published in 1975, 1983 and 1986 by the Thoroton Society in Nottingham and is in almost perfect, unread condition. The binding is in green cloth with gilt titling. There are a few very light marks on the page edges, but otherwise it is in excellent condition.
