A conic mirror – more properly a conicoidal mirror – is a conic section such as an ellipse, parabola, or hyperbola, rotated about its major axis to generate a mirror.Conic mirrors have special optical properties, which make them unsurpassed where performance requirements are severe. Many of these properties have been known for centuries, and a great literature has been built up around them. But never before has this information been collected into a single work.Some recently discovered properties of conic mirrors are presented here for the first time. These new properties, together with the classic ones, are the basis of the highest resolution and widest angle optical systems in the infrared, visible and X-ray regions of the spectrum. Wide angle and high resolution systems are studied as applied to various regions of the spectrum up to soft X-rays. The mathematics are at the engineering level so basic principles are treated as well, so that a full knowledge of mathematics is not necessary. The applications given here are general, and with the equations can be extended to a specific requirement.
