Suburban Days
K R G Browne’s name is now perhaps best remembered in conjunction with William Heath Robinson for the early titles in his ‘How to…’ series, on which they collaborated until Browne’s death in 1940. There is scant little information on Browne that doesn’t relate to these books, but he was a respectable literary figure in his own right – his novel, ‘Yes, Madam?’ was adapted for stage in the mid-30s, and he wrote the official handbook to Brighton 1936-1937 as well as a number of novels, now largely forgotten to memory and the market. One such being Suburban Days.Starring Eve and her seemingly never-named husband, who narrates in first person, these largely independent stories posing as chapters cover Eve’s envy of her neighbour’s new car, a rainy-day sale, and a trip to Brighton – which, as has been established, Browne had some authority on. Featuring such characters as Mrs Thimbleton-Twigg, Mrs Grisley-Goole, and Baldhead, these humorous stories are likely to appeal to a fan of P.G. Wodehouse or Dornford Yates.Suburban Days by K.R.G.
