Tupper was an English writer and poet. In 1837 the first series of Proverbial Philosophy was published; a long series of didactic moralisings composed in a lawyer\'s chambers in Old Square, Lincoln\'s Inn, during part of the previous year. His work was met with moderate success in Britain, while in the United States it was almost a complete failure. However, it slowly picked up steam and within thirty years it had passed through forty editions in Britain by 1867, while nearly a million copies were sold in the United States. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
