Dining Out?
W. Bently Capper, Dining Out?, Rockliff, 2nd revised edition, 1950, 122 pp, paperback. Fair condition; the covers are rather faded and discoloured but the text pages are in suprisingly good repair. Some pencil annotations. It\'s spring 1950 in London, and World War II restrictions on eating out - maximum prices and limits on the number of courses - have just been lifted. There\'s a whole new world of food out there, but there are daunting traps in store for the unwary diner. This little book, small enough to slip into a jacket pocket, was designed to help, explaining French menu terms, how to tip (\"one of the most vexatious of vexed questions for the inexperienced\"), what to drink, what to wear (\"service uniform is, of course, permissible anywhere, at any time\") and, naturally, where to go. Fascinating. With illustrations drawn by Blanche Sinclair.
