The Caravaners
Elizabeth von Arnim’s eighth novel is a sharp contrast to the sunny optimism of her first best-seller Elizabeth and her German Garden (1898) and her later hit The Enchanted April (1922).The Caravaners (1909) is a devastating comedy about an Edwardian caravan holiday in Kent, narrated by the pompous and self-important Baron von Ottringel, a Prussian Major in the German army. His much younger wife Edelgard becomes liberated by her holiday and by the English people with whom she becomes friends, and the Baron is appalled.Good condition for age. No highlighting or other notes. Endpapers are tanned; cover is intact with strong hinges, though has tea-cup type marks on the front and the spine colour is sunned/faded. Hence a low price for this edition, which is one of the scarcest.
