Bartholomeus Breenbergh - Joseph Distributing Corn in Egypt
The Dutch master Bartholomeus Breenbergh is best known as a landscape draughtsman and painter who was inspired by a visit to Italy in the 1620s. With his return to the Netherlands, however, he re-invented himself as a history painter, modelling his art on the Italian tradition and the works of Rembrandt\'s predecessors. This exhibition focuses upon the greatest history paintings of Breenbergh\'s later years, among them the Barber Institute\'s masterpiece, Joseph distributing corn in Egypt, which is here united with related works by the artist, his predecessors and contemporaries to place it in a wider context. These reveal Breenbergh to be one of the most inventive, original - and unjustly neglected - Dutch artists of his day. The author is Richard Verdi, Director of the Institute and a specialist in seventeenth-century art.
