Under Wingfield’s patronage, Ascham was encouraged to study and was sent to St John’s College, Cambridge. He went on to lecture on Greek and was Mathematical Lecturer to the University. He became a tutor to the young Princess Elizabeth in 1548 and retained his position of Latin Secretary when Elizabeth became queen. In 1563, when dining with Sir William Cecil and Sir Richard Sackville, it was suggested that he write a book ‘concerning the right order of teaching and honesty of living, for the good bringing up of children and young men’. The book was complete at his death in 1568 and was published by his widow in 1570.
