Part 2 starts with the sixth of February 1934, the Fascist movement in France; after being called to Moscow for talks with the Soviet leadership, the author Thorez suddenly switched his party to participation in the Popular Front—an alliance between Communists, Socialists, and Radical Socialists. The front, because of strong electoral discipline, managed to win the elections of 1936 and to enact long-neglected social legislation.
