Florilegium Hebraicum - Johanne Buxtorf (Basel, 1648)
Among the most notable works of pioneering Christian Hebraicist Johannes Buxtorf II (1599 - 1664), Florilegium Hebraicum is a lexicon of famous Hebrew quotations, proverbs, and literary excerpts, translated into Latin. Here Buxtorf has compiled and translated hundreds of quotes, ranging from biblical passages to the writings of prominent rabbis and scholars of the middle ages, and arranged them alphabetically according to subject matter or theme. Includes a preface by Buxtorf with decorative woodblock headpiece, tailpiece and initial. Text in Latin and Hebrew. Published in Basel in 1648, this volume has been rebound at some point in its long life. Boards have since warped slightly. Front hinge is cracking behind the end paper. Text block in good condition but pages are foxed, consummate with the age of the volume.A highly unusual piece.
