The writings of pioneer archaeologist John Aubrey, written between 1665 and 1693, are published together for the first time in these two large, luxury volumes.The works are in four parts: \"Templa Druidum\", a discussion of supposed druidic temples such as Stonehenge and Avebury; \"Chorographia Antiquaria\", a survey of Roman towns, hillforts, and castles in Britain; and finally a review of other archaeological remains, including monuments, roads, coins and urns. The books contain facsimiles of the original printed pages and handwritten manuscripts, with transcriptions, translations, and explanatory annotations as necessary.This first edition was limited to 595 copies and issued only to subscribers.Two volumes bound in brown cloth with gilt-stamped portrait of Aubrey on the front boards and gilt lettering on the spines. Top edges gilded (with some faint scratches) and other edges white (very slightly dirty). Gold bookmark ribbons. Head and tail of both volumes are bumped, but bindings otherwise as new. Internally, the books are as new, excepting some notes in pencil on the rear flyleaves.
