The book presents the work experience from a standpoint rarely taken - that of the worker.  By devoting attention to such aspects as unemployment, technological change, the position of women, and recent plans to legislate industrial democracy they attempt to show how pervasive have been the processes of socialisation in the work place, the constraining effects of working class organisations, and the ideologies that have been used to justify them.
