Oswald - Northumbrian King to European Saint
St Oswald, king of Northumbria from 634 - 642, is a commanding figure whose life and reign dominate our understanding of seventh-century England. In battle he was a successful warrior king of his age, recognised as overlord of much of Britain, but he also enjoyed a reputation for sanctity. He instigated the mission of St Aidan to convert Northumbria and his reign saw the foundation of the monastery of Lindisfarne. Finally he was killed in battle against the pagan Penda, king of the Mercians; but his life became the inspiration for legends as his cult spread throughout Europe in the middle ages. This volume of eleven essays by leading historians and archaeologists places Oswald\'s reign in its seventh century context and traces the growth of his cult to the broader European and later medieval world. Illustrated with 16 pp section of b/w photos. Condition: Good. Pages clean with no annotations. Some creasing to the back cover, and some of the illustration sections.
