If you love a whisky with personality, try Laphroaig. This famously peaty single malt, made on the Isle of Islay, is no shrinking violet. It uses fresh Kilbride stream water, floor-malted barley and – crucially for that characteristically punchy flavour – hand-cut peat. It’s the mix of heather, lichen and moss found in this peat that\'s said to give Laphroaig its characteristic taste. The 10-year-old single malt is distilled the same way as it has been for 75 years, and it\'s still bagging gold medals. It\'s full-bodied and smoky, with a hint of sweetness and seaweed. It’s best served on its own or with strong blue cheese.
