Cancun Underwater Museum of Art The Cancun Underwater Museum is the most famous underwater sculpture museum in the world, with over 470 life-sized statues erected deep on the sea bed. This incredible place is not just an unusual work of art, itandrsquo;s also an eco-project devoted to conservation of the area. How does it work? The Underwater Museum began as an idea to create an artificial reef featuring sculptures made from marine concrete. Their purpose was to conserve the existing natural reefs and provide new havens for fish and sea life. Some of the figures are now covered with algae, while others host some beautiful reef formations, making their facial features distorted and distinctly eerie. The huge underwater museum covers an area of over 420mandsup2; of barren sea bed and weighs over 180 tons. How do I see the statues?
