What are clotrimazole pessaries and creams used for?nClotrimazole pessaries are used for the treatment of internal vaginal thrush (Candidal vaginitis) caused by a yeast infection in and around the vagina. Clotrimazole cream is used for the external symptoms that come with thrush such as redness/inflammation, itching and soreness. What are the symptoms of thrush and yeast infections? Vaginal thrush can show symptoms such as itchiness, soreness, an odourless white discharge. Men however, do not always display any symptoms when they have thrush. If your partner has thrush it is recommended you consult with your doctor.nHow do you use Clotrimazole pessary and cream?nBefore bed, insert the pessary high into the vagina using the applicator and following instructions from the leaflet provided. You should wait until your period has finished before you used the pessary.nApply the cream to the external surrounding areas of your vagina and back passgae where symptoms show such as burning skin and itchiness. Rub the cream in gently up to three times daily. If you are on your period you may use the cream during this time. You may use the cream until the internal infection has gone.nA single dose of Clotrimazole 500mg is usually enough to rid those of the infection within 3-4 days. If symptoms persist after this time then you should seek medical advice from your doctor.nWhat precautions should I take before using Clotrimazole?nAlways consult with your doctor before taking any medications and also if any of the following apply to you:n• If you are pregnant. This is because you should only use medicines on the recommendation of a doctor while you are expecting a baby. Also, you may need to use clotrimazole for a longer period of time during pregnancy than is usually recommended.n• If you are under 16 or over 60 years of age.n• If you have had more than two episodes of thrush in six months.n• If you have a foul-smelling or blood-stained vaginal discharge, or if you have blisters or sores in the vaginal area.n• If you are in pain, feel sick, or have diarrhoea or a fever.n• If you have previously had a sexually transmitted disease, or if you have had a partner with a sexually transmitted disease.n• If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.n• If you are using or taking any other medicines.
