Halfway up Commercial Street, one block away from Spitalfields Market lies a now characterless, anonymous stretch of tarmac which, unlikely as it may seem, once used to be Dorset Street, the most notorious thoroughfare in the Capital; resort of thieves, con-men, murderers, prostitutes and, most notably, Jack the Ripper.The book chronicles the rise and fall of Dorset Street, from its promising beginnings at the centre of the seventeenth century silk weaving industry, through its descent into iniquity and vice, to its demolition in the twentieth century.
