Birds have always been with us. Around them has grown up a substantial body of folklore, often regionally based and dating from as far back as the Druids. They have proved an inspiration for some of the finest writing in the English language from the work of Anglo Saxons to modern poets. Species by species, this text delves into this heritage of bird lore, discussing the origin of the bird`s name, any regional variations in that name, and any folklore attached to that species.
