Twickenham Past
Twickenham, with its spectacular riverside frontage, has long been a favourite resort for Londoners. First there were country houses, and then came day-trippers by steamboat, rail and car. Despite some architectural losses, there is still much of its heritage to see; the 17th century painting on the cover depicts buildings which all survive. Montpelier Row is a fine terrace, Orleans House is now an art gallery, and Strawberry Hill may be visited by the public on occasions. Famous residents have included the artists Godfrey Kneller, Turner, Van Gogh and Scott, and the poet Alexander Pope.
