Exclusive to Curious Egg. ‘Banana Flats’ is one in an edition of only 50 high quality limited edition prints by Abi Baikie created on the highest quality Hahnemuhle photorag paper using museum quality inks. Taken from the original mixed media artwork its one of a series of works inspired by her travels to Asia. Abi creates her artworks by screen printing in layers, then sometimes working on top with stencilled motifs and hand painted imagery in oils. “I often see bananas in large bunches when traveling Asia and often eat them too! I wasn’t sure why I created this piece, but when visiting a friend’s new home in Leith, Edinburgh I viewed the Banana Flats from her back window. The building fascinated me just like The White Building had in Cambodia. I enjoyed the link back to my home country and named the work after the flats in Edinburgh. My travels to Asia inspired my current style, embracing strong colours and striking patterns, imitating the vibrancy and bustle that first hits you in countries like Cambodia and India. I often begin with bold, striking backgrounds then select individual objects to oil paint on top, which are selected from my own photographs I take during my travels. These objects give a human aspect to the work, something the viewer can relate to, something familiar. However, they are often unusual or slightly abstract so they cannot be placed entirely and maintain a little unfamiliarity and curiosity.” Abi Baikie
