This striking painting by Scottish artist Gill Walton is an original work created exclusively for the Curious Egg Art Room. The piece is one of two new pieces created with oils on Aluminium to give a beautiful almost translucent quality. ‘I love drama and narrative in paintings and the ones you see here are based on performers in the peking opera. I collect chinoiserie and willow pattern porcelain and I’m inspired by the delicacy of movement yet the strength of the opera performances. I decided to make the figures look like they are made of strong porcelain, I also played with the colours in the headdresses deciding to use a strong cobalt blue which is the pigment used in the traditional willow pattern and paired it with my favourite yellow. My painting practice is slow, using many layers of very fine paint, the faces and expressions change many times during the process depending on how I am feeling that day. These faces more than most reflect those changing moods.
