Bushings (also known as cushions) are possibly the most underrated and neglected components of your roller skates – quite surprising as they’re also one of the cheapest! Essentially, bushings (cushions) are your roller skates shock absorbers and just as with automobiles, bushings make a significant difference to the smoothness and performance of your ride. Bushings come in different shapes and sizes to fit your roller skates and in different “strengths” (durometer ratings) to tell you how hard they are… higher number = harder. Your roller skates bushings should be checked and regularly replaced if you want to keep your skates performing at their best after all, you wouldn’t drive your car without good suspension! There’s no “right hardness” of bushings and you might prefer to have different setups for different places and styles… In general, harder cushions give you some extra stability and possibly speed, but at the cost of manoeuvrability. Softer cushions will give you tighter turns and more agility, but too soft might make your roller skates feel unstable, especially if you’re jumping, going fast or (sorry) on the heavy side.
