The Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat was an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that began service with both the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy. First used by the British in the North Atlantic, the Wildcat was the only effective fighter available to the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during the early part of WW2. The F4F's high speed range and dive, coupled with tactics and manoeuvres using altitude advantage resulted in a high air combat kill-to-loss ratios. The Wildcat was built throughout the war to serve on escort carrier where larger and heavier fighters could not be used. Characterised by its stubby appearance the Wildcat had been developed from Gruman's successful range of pre-war biplanes and had entered service with the US Navy a year prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. By the time of the crucial battles from Midway and Guadalcanal the F4F-4 model had become the most numerous varient and new tactics enabled American naval and marine pilots to gain the upper hand on the previously all-conquering Mitsubishi Zero.
