Rock Hudson stars as Captain Turner, leading a detachment of US Army paratrooper saboteurs dropped behind the German lines in Italy. Its mission is to blow up a strategic dam. However, the unit is ambushed and only Turner survives. He is picked up by a ragtag group of local youths who, realising that he needs medical attention, kidnap German doctor Bianca Freedling (Sylva Koscina) to nurse him to health, keeping her captive even after Turner s recovery. Once fit, the youths strike a bargain with him - they will help him blow the dam if he will help them get revenge on cruel SS officer Sturmbannhrer Taussig and the Germans, who destroyed their village and murdered their parents.
