The hugely popular 1973 BBC naval drama series‚  Produced in close collaboration with the Royal Navy, examining the working lives of Royal Marines at sea. The HMS Hero is captained by Commander Nialls (Donald Burton) and features David Savile and James Cosmo amongst the crew. The series focuses on the professional and personal lives of all crew members, from the Captain down to the lower decks, as they travel the world on tours of duty and tackle dangerous seafaring missions. Launching in 1973, Warship was a groundbreaking series that blurred the lines between drama and documentary. Real-life Royal Marines were a part of the cast, and the series was filmed on fully operational naval vessels.‚  Writer (and Royal Navy Officer) Ian Mackintosh teamed up with producer Anthony Coburn, who wanted to create a series that would do for the Navy what Z-Cars had done for the Police.
