Both the book and the film are drawn from the unpublished diary of Antonina Zabinski, which recounts the true story of how she and her husband, Jan Zabinski, saved the lives of 300 Jews who had been imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto following the German invasion of Poland in September 1939.
