Judi Dench stars as Queen Victoria in a true story about her deep friendship with an Indian servant. A little-known episode from the final years of Queen Victorias reign provides the inspiration for this unexpected odd-couple comedy drama, which reflects upon changing British attitudes towards India. Initially, it is his smile that captures the attention of the ageing and isolated monarch. Her welcoming attitude towards this Muslim newcomer contrasts with the outright hostility displayed by many of the royal household. Soon he is teaching Urdu to the Queen and telling her about the wonder of India, including the never-before-tasted mango fruit. Yet, it is the developing emotional bond between charming servant and lonely widow which makes the film a companion piece to Mrs Brown, an exploration of another friendship Victoria had with a servant earlier on during her reign.
