World War 1 is raging  in this film from the 1930\'s where Vivien Leigh  plays a Stockholm-dwelling British double agent who delivers false  Allied information to the German intelligence  HQ in Paris. However, she falls in love with a suave baron who just happens to be heading up the German intelligence-gathering efforts. When  Madeleine meets German soldier Karl Von Marwitz (Conrad Veidt), she falls head over heels. Karl, who is seemingly a footman of low rank, turns out to be a high-ranking official in the German army but Madeleine has secrets of her own - she is a spy, working for the Allies. As Madeleine and Karl are  sucked further into the brutal war, it may ironically be their risky and forbidden love that saves their lives.
