With the towns people afraid to outwardly accuse each other for fear of being accused themselves, suspicion and hatred soon reach dangerous levels. This cinematic masterpiece is a dark and subversive study of human nature starring Pierre Fresnay and Ginette Leclerc. The controversial film was condemned by both the political left and right, along with the church upon its release and resulted in Clouzot being banned from making films for the two years following its release.
