In a role that suits him down to the ground, Hugh Grant stars as pedantic English cartographer Reginald Anson, who turns up in a small Welsh village to get an accurate measurement of their local mountain. Anson manages to offend the entire Welsh village of Ffynnon Garw when he rules that their prized landmark is not a mountain but a hill. Anson is soon to find, however, that the locals will stop at nothing to defend their honour, and spearheading their efforts is young barmaid Betty, who tries to seduce Anson and thus convince him to reverse his ruling.
