Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell star in the classic 1940s film noir directed by Edmund Goulding. Confidence trickster Stanton Carlisle finds a way to cheat fellow carnival act Mademoiselle Zeena into teaching him the special code she uses in order to convince punters she has mind-reading abilities. Later he and new wife Molly  leave the carnival and, working alongside psychologist Lilith Ritter who divulges secrets about her patients, Stanton begins making money as a spiritualist. However, the scheme doesn\'t last long and soon Stanton finds himself turning to alcohol to cope with his now dire circumstances...
