John Splendid: the tale of a poor gentleman and the little wars of Lorn.
Published 1898 by William Blackwood & Sons: London.  Hardback. Dark green cloth board covers with gilt lettering on front and spine. Corners bumped but otherwise very little shelf wear or fading. Gilt still bright. Green endpapers. Frontispiece (map) with tissue guard. Inked initials, crossed out, in corner of title page. Pages rough-cut. Age toned with occasional foxing. Salmon coloured end papers. Binding secure. In quite good condition, given its age. Historical fiction set in \'Argile\' Scotland near Ben Nevis.  By Scottish journalist Neil Monro (1863-1930), friend of Joseph Conrad, J. M. Barrie and Rudyard Kipling.  His best-known novels from  his early writing career are John Splendid, set around Montrose\'s campaign in the First Civil War and his attack on Inveraray, and Doom Castle, set around the Jacobite rising of 1745, which was dramatised by the BBC in 1980.
