One of the most notable Bibles of the 19th century, of which the New York Tribune declared: \"No illustrated Bible has ever equaled this in the artistic merit of its pictures.\" This large tome contains the Old and New Testaments in the King James translation, with references, copious critical and explanatory notes, a condensed concordance, and over nine hundred beautiful engravings by some of the most notable illustrators of the era, including Best, Castelli, Nimmo, Calvinolo, Dalton, Denny, Guchard, Justyn, Melville, Pearson, Philippoteaux, Smyth, Watkins, Washington, and the great Gustave Doré. We are unsure of the exact age of this Bible. We know that this edition was first published in two volumes in 1866, and that the publishers changed their name (adding \"and company\") in 1878. We suggest that it was printed and bound in the late 1870s.Bound in black and navy-blue leathers to give the effect of a \"half-bound\" book, gilt-edged, with elaborate gilt stamping on the spine. The leather is lightly rubbed, and there is a small stain on the front cover, but otherwise the binding is in excellent condition. Internally, the book has attractive marbled endpapers, the front interior hinge being split. Gift inscription on first page dated Christmas 1883. Four pages of family registry with details of the original owners, the Bugden family. Some pages have light foxing, but for the most part the pages are remarkably clean given the book\'s age and number of engravings. No pages are damaged or loose.This Bible has been very well cared-for and will make a wonderful reference copy for many, many decades to come.
