They are great for cut flowers, in large containers and the borders as well. These seeds can be grown as an annual flower in the colder areas as well. They are extremely popular as a cottage garden favourite. For Indoor sowing: January to April, in trays of seed compost. Sow thinly, cover lightly with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover the tray with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at approx. 15-20˚C. Seedlings appear 14-28 days. Remove cover when seedlings appear. When large enough transplant 5cm apart in trays. Stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frosts). Transplant 30cm apart in flowering position. Keep moist and weed-free. Flowers July to October, the same year. Remove dead heads to prolong flowering. Tip: Cut back stems after flowering to help plants clump up. Note: Hardy to -5˚C. Protect with mulch or straw in winter in cold areas and exposed positions or overwinter in a cool greenhouse or cold frame.
