Author Kenneth Clark is widely remembered for his television programmes on art, especially Civilisation, and the many works of art criticism he wrote during his lifetime. Appointed at the age of 30, he was the youngest ever Director of the National Gallery, London, from 1934 to 1945, before becoming Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford and later Chairman of the Arts Council.
