Every base is carved on a minute scale, creating a delicate yet robustly well made foundation for each piece. The bishops, above their base, have an ornamental lotus flower balcony from where a shoot of that recognizable, Staunton style, spherical diamond points towards the sun. On a far grander scale the king is also shaped that way, blossoming from a double lotus flower balcony to 5.5 inches in height. The pawns are perhaps the most impressive piece in this hand carved set, each of which is shaped and detailed like a totem pole.
