We\'ve paired these Isle of Lewis chess pieces, crafted in England by Berkeley Chess, with a deluxe wenge and maple board, produced in Spain by the prestigious manufacturer, Rechapados Ferrer. The result is a set that perfectly captures the spirit of the original Isle of Lewis pieces, but adds a luxurious look and feel. The original Lewis Chessmen were carved mostly from walrus ivory with a few pieces carved from whale teeth. The carvings are finely detailed and character has been infused into the pieces. The pieces were found in impeccable condition; only the colouring showed significant wear. Some of the pieces have red staining that has eroded over time, which gives a good indication that the game of chess in medieval times was played with red and white pieces rather than the black and white of modern chess.
