Many vases are designed to place the main focus on what they hold, but there is no reason why the vase itself should not be the centre of attention. Judging by his work the designer Jonathan Adler clearly believes this. The Metropolis is a remarkable piece of retro-modernism which, as its name suggests, references the iconic robot of the classic German expressionist silent movie. Its face is subtly revised to echo the surrealist art of the period and replaces the menace of the original with a quirky, cheerful expression.
