To earn a GOTS certificate the product must contain at least 95% organic cotton and for a OCS certificate the minimum is 50%. Regular cotton is a very resource-heavy material. With plants needing artificial irrigation and factories using a lot of water when dyeing and preparing the textiles - producing a normal t-shirt can end up using 2,500 litres of water.
