This sentimental piece is a highly sought after recognising the All Ireland Winners.  * Made to Order 18.3cmH x 15.2cmD History of the Ardagh Chalice In 1868 a young boy named Quin was out digging potatoes in a place called Reerasta near the village of Ardagh in Co Limerick. While digging near a bank close to a thorn bush he found the surface soft but when he drove his spade into the place he found it strike something hard, thinking it a rock he cleared away the earth and found a cup later named the Ardagh Chalice. This Chalice is now displayed in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. It is considered to be the finest specimen of Celtic art and it is believed that it was made in the 12th century. Its discovery coincided with the revival of Celtic art in the latter part of the 19th century, which in turn led to such wonderful replicas as the Sam Maguire cup. Sam Maguire, was born in Dunmanaway in Co Cork. He moved to London in his teens and became actively involved with the Gaelic Athletic Association and latterly the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was an associate of Michael Collins and after the Treaty returned to Ireland. After a brief spell in the Irish Civil Service he returned to his native Cork and renewed his involvement in the G.A.A. After his untimely death in 1927 at the age of 48, a group of his friends got together and decided to commission a trophy as a permanent reminder of his service to his country and his dedication to the Gaelic Athletic Association. It was designed in 1928 by the firm of Hopkins and Hopkins of Dublin. It was presented to the G.AA and thereafter awarded each year to the winners of the All Ireland Senior Gaelic football championship.
