Times were tough.But Hopper was hopeful. Lula-Mae was returning his calls. The band were still together. Summers bleaching heat was shading intoautumn. And he still had his regular slot at the Lounge at the Edge of Town.Every night, amid the faded velour and the fading regulars, he stood up on the stage and sang his songs of love and loss, hope andhangover, perdition and resurrection. Everything hed ever known for sure found its way into his voice, and the band were with himevery step. Hopper could feel the songs coming from deep inside him. His life was about to change. He could feel it.
