Very popular since its inception and now in its third year of limited edition release, Seiko Prospex Black Series was originally inspired by the mysterious world of night diving.  The markers’ and lumibrite orange colouring are designed for increased visibility in the dark word of the night sea – orange is the colour of night divers’ lamps, allowing time to be read clearly under dark conditions. The 2021 collection is a trio of Seiko’s signature designs, incorporating a ‘Monster,’ ‘Tuna,’ and ‘Samurai’ – nicknames invented by Seiko fans for their shapes and looks.  This specific watch is named ‘Samurai’ because of its angular shaped design which looks as if it were sliced by a Japanese Samurai sword. Prospex is a combination of the words \'Professional\' and \'Specifications.\' Seiko Prospex timepieces are designed to be practical, reliable and durable; to meet the high standards required in extreme environments for sports lovers and adventure seekers alike. Since launching Japan’s first diver’s watch in 1965, Seiko’s innovative watchmaking has changed global dive watch standards. The Case: Seiko Prospex Samurai SRPH11K1 Black Series Limited Edition Mens measures 44mm in diameter and it is made from solid stainless steel. The watch’s ‘Samurai’ nickname derives from the case’s sharp, clean-cut, tapered edges that look as if they have been sliced off by a ‘Katana’ sword. The powerful steel case has been brushed, which provides the watch with a lustre that also helps to ensure the longevity of the timepiece. The case is presented in all emulating the mysterious world of nighttime diving. A uni-directional steel rotating bezel sits on top of the case, it is presented in a subtle two-tone colour scheme of black and grey. A 60-minute scale is present on the bezel, which allows the wearer to keep track of time spent under water. The sharp coined edges of the bezel allow it to be easily rotated and put to use, while also bestowing the watch with a contemporary feel. A luminescent pip is situated at the 12 o’clock mark makes it easier for the 60-minute scale to be read underwater. On the front of the case hardlex glass has been used, providing the wearer with high resistance to scratches and impact. On the back of the case there is a stainless steel screw down case back that has been specially engraved signifying that this is watch is a limited edition model of only 8000 pieces . The Dial: The matte black dial imitates the mystical ambience of a nighttime dive. The dial consists of thick, deeply applied hour markers that are presented in a patina-style tone, which gives the watch a genuine vintage feel. The dial’s bold handset resembles a samurai’s ‘Katana’ when they overlap one another, which is another reason behind the watch’s nickname. The orange minute hand stands out against the backdrop of the black dial, emulating the bioluminescent light spectacle one may experience when night diving. Orange is also the colour of a night diver’s lamp and is the last colour that can be seen in darkness. The hour markers and handset have been filled with LumiBrite material which allows the wearer to read the dial even in the darkest depth’s of the ocean. The functionality of the dial is underscored by the neat placement of the date window, which is positioned besides the 3 o’clock marker.  The Strap: The black accordion-style strap is made from silicone and it is a style that was first invented by Seiko in 1975, ensuring that their watches remained securely fastened on the wearer’s wrist whatever the ambient pressure. It also offered greater levels of comfort through its ease of use by expanding and contracting to fit over a wet suit when worn diving. The Seiko wave logo also has been pressed into the strap. It fastens securely through the use of a black PVD buckle. The Functions: Seiko’s exclusive 4R35 automatic movement powers this timepiece. It is a self-winding calibre with manual-winding capacity and that has a hacking feature. The 4R35 movement has a 41 hour power reserve and it consists of 23 jewels and it beats at 21,600vph.
